Mr. Frett began training at the South Jersey Karate Club in 1973 under direct instruction of Leslie Safar Sensei and the supervision of Teriyuki Okazaki Sensei. Harry would devote large portions of his life to martial arts over the following years. He would arrive at the dojo and hour before class to dedicate him to kata practice as well as using the makiwara post, then train for two hours. Many Saturdays he would also spend at the dojo. After morning class he would drive to Philadelphia to take instructor-training classes by Okazaki Sensei. His hard work paid off on December 18th, 1978. Harry was awarded Shodan by the JKA under Sensei Okazaki. His training continued until 1982, when Harry and his wife Mary were blessed with their first son. During the next few years the Frett's were blessed with more children and Harry found it impossible to train in the dojo. In 1998, after a 16-year absence, Mr. Frett began to train again, under Salvatore Lopresti Sensei. Harry enjoys the training he has been receiving over the past few years. His emphasis has been on discovering the true meanings behind the movements of those katas he so diligently practiced in his early days of training. One again his efforts paid off. In May of 2002 Harry earned his Nidan under Sensei Salvatore Lopresti. At age 50, he feels a renewed sense of confidence and feels as if he has the ability to defend himself in real situation. Presently the State of NJ's Juvenile Justice Commission, as a corrections officer, employs him. Karate training gives him a positive outlook on life and has actually prevented him form becoming seriously injured while on the job. |
